A Feeling of Depression

Someone once said “expectation begat frustration”. In other words when you expect something to happen and that thing is not coming forth, there is every possibility that you might want to get frustrated. But is it wrong to be expectant?

No. having expectation for something is it not wrong, after all Proverbs 10:28 says “the expectation of the righteous is joy…” (KJV) What is wrong about expecting is when you place your hope in man, because every expectation that is based on trust in man will always fail and lead to depression if not properly checked.

God never told us to rely on man but rather we should trust in Him and Him alone. For man will always fail but God can never fail. One way to eliminate every feeling of depression is to first and foremost rely on God and not man.

Some persons in our world of today have tied their happiness to their achievement in life and their level of success. In other words, the more successful they are they more happy they become but when things aren’t working the way they have had it in mind or sometimes planned out for it, they get heart broken. This is because they have placed too much expectation on their achievements.

Never allow your heart to be depressed because you are not where you would love to be or you haven’t accomplished much this year like you have planned even as the year is drawing closer to an end. It could even be something you have been praying to God about and it hasn’t shown up yet.

Rather than allowing such anxiety take over your heart why not be thankful to God that you are not where you use to be. Be thankful to God because you are making progress every day. There is always something to be thankful about.

Just like the Psalmist who wrote “count your blessings and name them one by one…” Rather than counting your lack, wants, shortcomings, failures and disappointments, why not use that moment to ponder on how God has brought you out from the storms of life.

A man who is depressed has chosen by himself to be depressed. But guide your heart jealously, don’t allow any symptom of depression in it not even an iota of it.

When you spend more time pondering on thoughts that makes you depressive, the more depressed you would become, but when such thoughts come channel your mind to God’s Word.

Just like what Paul said in Philippians 4: 4 & 6 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again rejoice… Do not be anxious about anything…”

A mind that is hijacked by depression does not see the brighter side.

God’s Word is the cure to a depressed mind. When you saturate your mind with the Word all that will come out of you will be the Word.

Don’t go too far still pondering on that thought that makes you depress, begin to ponder on the Word.
