Sometimes I ask myself “as believers are we to live by the traditions that have been handed over to us from past generations?”
Growing up as a young boy in a neighborhood where most people are inclined to living by traditions, we are told about the things of old and the manner in which we are to live in accordance with the principles and traditions. Back then we so much believed in these things that they became a part of our everyday living.
We become so conscious of it to the point that whenever we want to do something contrary to what we have been told, we immediately think of the consequences and would refrain from such.
Let me share a few things my Grandmother said to me years ago. She said: “don’t travel with a mortar inside your car otherwise the car will have an accident. To prevent the accident put a coin inside the mortar”. Does this sound familiar to you? She also said “don’t drink the water from a coconut, it makes one dull”.
I’m sure you have something to say about that also. You may have heard a few things in the past also. These are the few things that I held on to in my early years.
You can imagine the lies that the devil has fed a lot of young minds today with. A lot of people are walking with wrong mentalities from the lies that have been communicated to them by the society.
Proverbs 23:7 says “as a man thinketh in his heart so is he…” You are a product of what you think and you think about what you have either seen or heard. Right believing will lead to a right living. Not until I came to an understanding of God’s word that I got liberated me from those erroneous mindsets. Truly God’s word is sharper than any two-edged sword!
People are bound today by the fear of what doesn’t even exist. They are surrounded by so many fears; fear of the unknown that has been passed down to them from generations. For how long shall you continue like this? It has been clearly written in the book of Hosea 4:6 “my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
As believers every tradition that you are exposed to must be checked with God’s word and if it is not consistent with the word do away with it.
Man has succeeded in bringing a lot of do’s and don’ts to the extent that it now affects their relationship with God. They get tied up to the point that it is now difficult for them to come out of it. Apostle Paul rightly wrote to the saints in the book of Galatians 5:1 “for freedom has Christ set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
The traditions of men will always keep you in bondage, but Christ has set you free. Start reprogramming your mind by continuously feeding on the Word of God. (See Rom 12:1-2.) Let the Word of God dominate your mind and break you free from every ungodly thought that has held you bound.
Give no room for the lies of the devil. Don’t base your life on things that are not spoken of you in God’s Word.
Matt 7:13 “you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down…” Christians who still hold on to the traditions of men have little or no faith in God’s word. Their minds have been filled with lies that they can hardly even perceive when the truth is presented to them.
People who still hold fast to these things deny the working power of God over their lives. 1Tim 4:7 says “don’t have anything to do with godless myths that old women like to tell. Rather train yourself to live a godly life” (God’s Word Translation). This instruction is precise.
Paying attention to godless stories or silly tales would add nothing to your spiritual growth but rather take away from you. They create doubt and unbelief in your heart. It makes you not to have faith in God’s word: it’s a faith-killer.
Exercise yourself everyday unto the God life you have received, you are now a partaker of God’s divine nature (see 2Pet 1:3). Pay no further attention to the lies of the devil.
If you were afraid of drinking coconut water because of what you have heard, exercise yourself unto godliness, remind yourself of the word of God. Psalms 24: 1 says “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it…” including this coconut and as I drink this water I am nourished in my body’. Put the word of God to work every day in your life, let God’s word be your standard for living.
