Ephesians 4: 11-12
“and He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelist, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry…” (NKJV)
Isn’t it wonderful to know that God’s word has an answer to every questions that may arise. God’s word brings to an end every dispute that may arise as a result of inaccurate understanding of Scriptures. God’s word has the final say.
There are believers who only chose what to believe and what not to believe. If God’s Word makes sense to them they believe the word, if the Word doesn’t make sense to them they won’t believe.
But for how long will you continue to follow God that way? That’s not how we ought to relate to the Word. Any passage of the scripture you seems not to understand, you ask the Holy Spirit to shed more light on it. You don’t interpret scriptures by the way you feel, you don’t interpret scriptures from your sense or head knowledge. It can only be interpreted through the help of the Holy Spirit.
There are believers out there who still think that working in the house of God is meant for a particular set of persons. They are waiting for God to appear to them in an audible voice saying “my son, my son, you are to work in my house”, anything short of that, they are not ready to make a move. Well, if you are waiting for that, you might never see that happen. Do you know why? God has Himself given to His Church ministry gifts (apostles, pastors, teachers, prophets, and evangelists) to equip you to work in His house.
As a believer you are meant to be doing something for God in your place of worship. God didn’t call you into that family for you to remain idle. It’s funny to know that there are Christians who are a part of a Church assembly for several years but they are never a part of any department or unit. As a believer you are meant to be doing something for God in your place of worship.
God gave the Church the fivefold ministry gifts for several reasons, but among all these reasons, (one of which is to equip the saints for the work of ministry), the scripture above establish a solid truth which is: every believer ought to be working for God in any ministry they belong to. If as a believer, you have been part of a Church assembly for several years and you are idle in that assembly, you are disobeying the truth.
Equipping the saints for the work of the ministry is one of the important reasons God gave these gifts to the Church. This truth should not be overlooked. Every command always comes with a blessing. You can’t work and realise that He doesn’t reward your efforts. I’m not saying you quickly look for something to do in God’s house because of what He will give to you, no. Do it because of your love for His work.
Some months ago, I went to visit a church assembly and on getting there I realized that they are just getting the hall ready for meeting, so I joined them in cleaning the hall and a lady walked up to me and asked if I was a part of the team and I said no and I told her that I don’t need to be a part of the team for me to clean God’s house.
It will amaze you to know that, while the brethren were cleaning up the hall, you see others standing and waiting for them to finish, some even go as far as to gist and laugh, all because they are waiting for them to finish cleaning. All because they are not a part of the team, that’s not how things ought to be done in the house of God. It doesn’t matter whether you are a part of the team of any unit or not, you are meant to join the work force in getting things ready for the meeting.
The work of the ministry is the work of every believer. It is not meant for some while others are to be left out. If in an assembly, there are 100 believers, all 100 believers ought to be functional in the work of the ministry.
This is why the ministry’s gift was given to the Church. In as much as you are born again, you are meant to be doing something in your place of worship. Remove this mentality of “I’m not in this unit so I won’t participate”.
The truth is that, the pastor in charge of the church assembly doesn’t need to announce for believers to come join a unit or department. As believers, once you notice that a particular unit lacks man power, you are meant to fill in such gaps. You don’t need to wait for the pastor to announce.
The work of the ministry is not meant for the pastors or the prophets or any other of the offices alone but rather, it is meant for all believers. God gave these set of persons to the Church, to equip the saints and the saints are meant to work alongside these persons to build up the Body of Christ.
You have a role to play in the Body of Christ here on earth. God deposited those talents, gifts and abilities in you so, you can use it to advance His work here on earth.
