Understanding the Purpose of Singleness (II)

Having laid the necessary foundation in the previous part of this article, I will be going a bit further into sharing with you the four purposes of singleness. I first shared these purposes at a single’s meeting that I was invited to speak. So, today I’m sharing this with you.

The purpose of singleness is to be concerned with the Lord’s affairs

The purpose of singleness is to live a life devoted to God. The best time to ever build a solid or firm relationship with God is in the days of your youth. Now is the time to get concerned about the Lord’s affairs. Now is the time to get occupied with the things that occupy the heart of God. Your relationship with God is the greatest relationship you can ever have on the face of this earth. He is not just the source of your life, He is your life. You can’t take Him out of the equation because if you do your answers will never be correct. Col 1:17 says “He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together”.

Everything about your life holds together because of Jesus! A life outside of Christ like the saying goes is a crisis. John 10:10 makes it clears that “the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy…”. But Prov. 18:10 makes us understand that “the name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs to it and are safe”. Christ is the dwelling place for every youth out there to escape the corruption in the world (see 2Pet. 1:4). Little wonder why Paul wrote in his second letter to his young protégé Timothy “flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace…” (2Tim 2:22).

Your relationship with the Father reveals a lot to you amongst which is the very reason you are existing – purpose. To know the course of your life, the direction you should go per time, you need to build an intimate relationship with God. This should be your desire. To want to grow and increase your revelation of the person of Christ. In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul wrote “…an unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs – how he can please the Lord…an unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in body and spirit” (1Cor 7:32-34). This should be the longing and desire of every single out there; to please the Lord and be devoted to His affairs in spirit, soul, and body. This is paramount and cannot be overemphasized.

The period of singleness is not to waste your time and energy on lustful desires. Eccl 11:9 “be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment”.

The purpose of singleness is for personal development

The period of singleness is to help us build character. It is for personal development. There are many singles out there who invest more in gadgets and accessories than they invest in themselves. They can give you a list of all the gadgets they have used but find it hard to recollect on the number of books they have read in a year. I’m not saying buying gadgets is wasteful, but we must learn to give adequate attention to other pressing areas of our life. It’s sad to say that some persons pay more attention to gadgets than on personal development. You must learn to build yourself as a single man and woman. Invest in things your life depends on. Spend time building yourself and develop characters that are profitable to you now and in the future.

I could remember some years back I could barely stand in front of an audience to deliver a speech but because I knew the direction in which I was going, I knew I will be standing more in front of crowds, so I started developing my skills on public speaking and today I happy to know that I can stand in front of an audience.

Some of us have characters that are offensive and we seem to do nothing about it. We take such characters into relationships and we expect everything to go smooth and nice. Rotten attitude will always ruin a relationship if nothing is done about it now. Now is the time to start working on certain characters that you know will not make you productive. Build characters that can sustain a relationship, characters that are essential to where you are going. Develop yourself, add value to your life. Nobody likes to associate themselves with people who are liabilities to them.

Some persons tend not to have the future in mind so they are laid back, doing nothing about the present. It is only those who know where they are going will give adequate attention to the preparation of the present. The present is truly a blessing! There are some of us that are lazy, sluggish, nonchalant, if we don’t deal with these things now they will deal with us later.

Paul wrote, “I commend you to God and to the word of his grace which is able to build you up…” (Acts 20:32). 2Tim 3:16 “all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for…correcting and training in righteousness”. The Word of God is the answer or cure to every character deficiency in the life of man. Results that our human efforts can’t produce, God’s Word has! As you yield to the Holy Spirit to help you deal with it you will begin to see changes.
