It has been on my mind to write on this topic for quite some time now. I guess it’s time I put my pen to paper. After my previous article on Can a Christian Drink Alcohol? My eyes were opened to a lot of things about our understanding of who God is and then on the finished work of Christ. It seems many believers have allowed wrong teachings to frame their mindset of who God is. That’s not my discussion for today if you haven’t read that article please do so now.
Over time we have allowed our existence here on this earth realm to be reduced to our senses that we are gradually losing sight of the workings of the Spirit in our life, we seem not to know when God is at work. This has made it difficult for the Holy Spirit to do His work in us because we have our living to if we can’t see it then we can’t believe. It is like Man is now trying to live his life in the opposite direction of God’s true intent, Man wants to live from the physical than to the spiritual. We were created to function firstly from the spiritual then to the physical. That is, not living our life solely by the dictates of what we can see, hear or touch but something beyond that. Even when we can’t see it, we believe it is, when we can’t feel it, we know it’s there! Because we have reduced our living here on this earth realm to our senses, it has affected our walk with the Father. We want to relate with Him based on how we feel, sometimes we feel we are full of the Holy Spirit and other times we just feel as empty as a drum without substance in it.
Life is spiritual, therefore, the basis of our decisions on a daily basis is influenced first from the spiritual realm. Man’s decision to carry a particular task is either influenced by God or the devil. Man, standing at the center of the work of God and that of the devil lies what we call the free will. With our free will we can either choose to corporate with the Spirit of God or the devil. I encourage you to read up my article on Understanding the Purpose of Free Will to get a better understanding of this.
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
I Thessalonians 4:23 (NIV, emphasis added)
Man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body. The only way anyone can live or survive on this earth as designed by God is only if a body is given to them. That’s why God, in the person of Jesus Christ, took on a human form so as to enable him to die for the sins of mankind. Hebrews 10:5 ‘Therefore, when He (Jesus) came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me”. Spirits cannot die, and cannot function on this earth. So, it was important for Jesus to take on the form of a flesh primary to die. With our body, we connect with the physical world and operate the sense realm.
With our spirit, we connect with the spiritual realm. The New Creation begins in our spirit. The part of you that becomes born again is your spirit. The part of you that will come under condemnation if you are not born again is your spirit. The source of life and the life of a man is in the spirit of that man. That’s why when this body drops dead, the spirit in you will take on the heavenly. This is just on a brief note, maybe sometime later I will discuss different kinds of body.
The soul is the seat of man’s being. The soul is the center of expression and interaction of the things that comes from your spirit and that which you pick up from the physical. It is the soul that relates and interpret what your earthly body is physically experiencing and what your spirit is spiritually experiencing. That’s why in order to decipher accurately, that which is coming from the physical to the soul and that which is coming from the Holy Spirit to the soul, the word of God helps put us in a better position for that.
For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12 (NIV, emphasis added)
So, the word of God rightly divides soul and spirit. I believe also that joints and marrow speak on one and the same thing which is the body. You only find joints and marrow in the human body. Therefore, the word of God separates the activities that are of the physical and that which is coming from your spirit. As a believer, the Father leads you primarily by His Spirit (Holy Spirit) through His Word. The Holy Spirit is not resident in your body or soul but in your recreated spirit (see 1 Cor.6:17). This is how it works, God speaks to your spirit, through the Holy Spirit, then your spirit passes that messages to your soul, where the information is been processed, you received that message to your soul in the language you understand. Then your soul which comprises of your mind, will, and emotion passes that messages to your mind. The devil operates from the sense realm to get us to do his bidding, while God operates from the spirit through His word to get us to do His bidding. Now, it is all a matter of which of these has been able to dominate or lay hold of your soul. Is it the sense realm or the spiritual realm? The battle really is for your soul. That’s why we need the word of God to properly distinguish which of the spirit and that which is of the senses.
As a believer, your relationship or walk with the Father should not be based on your ‘feelings’. There are times you don’t ‘feel’ love of God, you ‘feel’ the power of God has left you, you ‘feel’ you lack is presence. Feelings like these are not real to you because it is all from the sense realm. Your true reality can be seen in from God’s word that we are eternally loved! Full of the Spirit and power! And His ever-abiding presence that’s is you! You tell yourself, whether I feel it or not, it doesn’t change who I am. God leads us by His Spirit according to His word and He wants us to make decisions on a daily basis not according to how we ‘feel’ about it but according to the provisions made in His word. He doesn’t want us acting independently of Him.
Life is spiritual, therefore, the essence of your existence is to live for Him, be guided by His Spirit to be brought into His plan and purpose for your life. Live every day fully conscious of this, allow your soul to be dominated by the word of God so as to be conformed into the image of the one who has begotten you through His death, burial and resurrection. Any leading or promptings apart from the Spirit of God cannot produce the result of God. The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing (see John 6:63). Because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God (see Romans 8:14).
